Let's Get Minimal
Pare down your possessions with buys that give you the most bang for your buck.
There are two key reasons behind the way I keep my home: 1. My college job as a housekeeper, and 2. The three years I spent living in Japan. Because of these experiences, I try to avoid too much clutter by doing seasonal clean-outs and really taking the time to consider whether I need something or just want it before buying. While I’m far from being a true minimalist (just take a look inside my bathroom cabinet), I’m always looking for ways to consolidate and make smarter purchases.
Being at home so much these past 15+ months, many of us have reevaluated everything we’ve been hanging onto and tried to reimagine our spaces to better serve our needs and lifestyles. The three items featured this week can help you streamline and de-clutter your home, wardrobe and beauty routine. Their classic designs are reliability have no expiration date, so you won’t get sick of them any time soon.
It’s time to start living with less things you love more.
1. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Or Golden Shimmer Multi-Purpose Dry Oil (£29.50)
A summer essential made for holidays. This French pharmacy classic from Nuxe (founded by Aliza Jabès) can replace a multitude of products in your beauty routine, wherever you are. With a light, non-greasy texture, this dry oil works as a body/facial moisturizer, bronzer, highlighter, hair oil and perfume. The secret is the blend of nourishing oils: sweet almond, borage, camellia, argan, tsubaki, hazelnut and macadamia. It also has a subtle floral scent you won’t mind having on from head to toe. For the cooler months (or if you’re not into shimmer) try the original version.
2. Commando Faux Leather Legging (£72)
I recently took a year off of shopping. I was accumulating too many fast fashion and impulse clearance purchases and honestly wasn’t even sure what my personal style was anymore. Like a true Type A, I studied different lines, made notes and finally created a master list of wardrobe essentials. Among them were these leggings from Kerry O’Brien’s brand Commando that go just as well with heels as sneakers. They quickly became a favorite of mine for flying, too. They help me look pulled together while also remaining comfortable. I’m currently eyeing the patent version for fall.
3. Blomus Pilare Wine Rack (€79)
When I went searching for a sleek, unobtrusive wine wrack, this one from German brand Blomus immediately stood out. Founded by the Blome family in 1921 (originally as a maker of parts for bicycles), the brand expanded into home goods in 1961. Everything they make is simple, functional and elegant. I picked up the black version from minimalist haven Nordic Nest and have displayed it both on the floor and on top of a sideboard. For being so lightweight, it’s very sturdy and comes with rubber bumpers to keep it from sliding around. There’s also a nine-bottle version.
Something to think about …
As much as I love paring things down, I think full-on minimalism is a bit extreme. That’s why you’ll always find a few travel tchotchkes in my home. In this New Yorker piece from last year, Jia Tolentino examines contemporary minimalism and the many ways it can be interpreted through art, lifestyle and even our way of thinking.
