That New York Groove, Part One
Three spots always worth a visit when spending time—and money—in NYC.
For the first time in almost a year, I’m getting on a plane this week. I’ll be returning to New York City, the same place I departed from the last time I flew. Anxious and excited are two words that come to mind when I think of heading back to the airport, something I used to do several times a year without thinking twice. And that first trip back to your home country after living abroad is always a bit surreal and awkward. Certain behaviors, sounds and sights stand out to you that you never noticed before. But arriving in NYC always triggers the most comforting type of muscle memory for me. It’s a place I quickly feel comfortable in, falling into step without even trying.
So here’s something a little different this week: I’m sharing three of my favorite NYC shopping destinations. These are must-see spots to pick up some of the items already featured here and lots of other MIDDI-esque beauty, fashion and home goodies. I’m aiming to visit all three of them during my trip this week—hopefully my suitcase is big enough.
And if you’re also traveling, stay well.
1. Rescue Spa (29 E 19th St)
My beauty sanctuary. I started shopping at Rescue Spa while I was living in Detroit. I first had an online consultation, which introduced me to this face cream and this retinol I’ve shared here. They also sell this face wash I mentioned last week. Founded by Paris-trained esthetician Danuta Mieloch as the sister outpost to her Philadelphia flagship, Rescue Spa specializes in treatments using the Biologique Recherche range. Of all the facials I’ve gotten, their original Rescue Facial remains the only one I’ve felt was worth the money. Tip: Add on microdermabrasion (and ask for Maven).
2. AYR (199 Lafayette Street)
If there is one area of my wardrobe I can easily justify spending more money on, it’s my denim. Good quality denim holds its shape and color wear after wear, wash after wash, making it worth the extra cost. One of my favorite brands is AYR (All Year Round), which was founded in NYC in 2016 by Jac Cameron and Maggie Winter. My pair of choice is The Bomb Pop (pictured above), which are so soft from the first wear it feels like you’ve had them for years. They also have just the right amount of stretch to hug your curves without looking like leggings. And no saggy butt, ever.
3. abc Carpet & Home (888 Broadway)
Whenever I need a gift, I go to abc Carpet & Home. They have everything from home furnishings and jewelry to beauty products from brands like Tracie Martyn and Esker. I could spend hours (and all of my savings) trying to take in all of the gorgeous items on offer in this store. Owner Paulette Cole, is passionate about finding items that aren’t only unique, but also fair trade and sourced responsibly from around the world. While you’re there, visit one of the three on-site restaurants from Cole and chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (my favorite is abc Kitchen).
Something to think about …
Since its founding in 1966, the National Organization for Women has been working for the protection and parity of women and their rights. Their core issues include economic justice, women’s health, LGBTQIA+ rights and combating racism and violence against all women.
