California is one of those places where so much seems possible. Perhaps it’s because of the film or tech industries, which produce the products that define our everyday lives, or maybe it’s the beatniks and flower children who challenged our culture, pulling us in new directions. But California remains a place where those dreams we dream could one day become tangible. The beaches and sunshine aren’t so bad either.
I was lucky enough to spend some time with family in California this past week, taking in the sights around San Francisco and Napa Valley. And while this is just one small part of the state, it reminded me of my past visits there and made it all the more clear what has led so many to call California home.
The three products in this week’s edition all boast a California connection. Add them to your life and routine to experience a bit of the Golden State wherever you are.
Let’s keep dreaming.
1. OSEA Sea Vitamin Boost (£37)
I always have a few different face mists on hand. Some are purely for the aromatherapy aspect of application, while others I rely on to help out my skin when it needs some TLC. I was immediately drawn to the gorgeous red hue (which doesn’t stain) of this mist from OSEA, the Malibu brand founded by Jenefer Palmer in 1996. The main ingredients in this mist are pomegranate and seaweed extracts, both of which are rich in antioxidants. There’s also hydrating glycerin in there and no artificial fragrances. Give your face a spritz and for bright, dewy skin in a flash.
2. Relic Vintage (1475 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117)
There is a true art to sourcing and caring for vintage clothing. And when you find a place that does it right, you really feel like you’re stepping back in time. The collection curated by Oran Scott and his team at Relic Vintage is exceptional, with everything to outfit you from head to toe in mid-century style. As soon as I walked in, my eyes immediately went to the beautiful coats and suits they stocked from my favorite fashion period, the 1940s. This store specializes in clothing, shoes and accessories from the 1920s to 1960s, and I only wish I’d had more time to spend there.
I like my art bright, colorful and playful. Those are three words I would also use to describe California. Paul Fuentes’ surreal works encompass all three of those characteristics and are sure to spark conversation with their bold colors and fantastical subjects. Capturing the glamor and eccentricity of Palm Springs, his photographs remind me of those by Gray Malin, but at a far more attainable price point. If you want a piece that really makes an impact, you can’t go wrong with one of his, which will transport you to sunny California whenever you look at it.
Something to think about …
Haight-Ashbury may not look quite as it did in 1967, but the tie-dyed, carefree magic of that summer of love remains. If you want to learn more about that famous season in 1967, this article from Vanity Fair is an excellent place to start.
Last week on MIDDI …
Aw, I didn't realize you were in town! I used to live a couple of blocks away from Buena Vista. Would've loved to see you but I hope you enjoyed your visit!
