How to Shop for … an LBD
Pick the perfect little black dress with these five tips.
An LBD is a real wardrobe power player. This is the dress that can do it all—work meetings, funerals, a nice dinner—one item that can serve as the base for countless outfits by changing up the accessories you pair with it.
Your go-to little black dress should be something you can reach for at a moment’s notice and know you’ll feel amazing in it. It should flatter your body and encompass your style. If you’re going to throw some extra money at one item in your closet, a little black dress is one you’re not likely to regret buying.

1. Think about your preferred silhouette.
To me, your little black dress should be an instant confidence booster, so think about the styles of dresses you usually feel your best in. Don’t compare yourself to other people—look at the other ones hanging in your closet and check for patterns in the length, cuts and materials. I feel most comfortable in a dress that has a higher neckline, is fitted through the chest and waist and is looser from the hips down.

There are lots of options out there, but when shopping for an item you plan to hang onto for more than a season like an LBD, go the classic route. When it comes to an item like an LBD, I would rather spend more money now than head back to the store for an annual replacement. Pick a brand with a proven track record of quality and do your research about the materials they use and where they come from. If they offer in-house services like alterations and make their sustainability efforts known, that’s even better.
5. Make sure the fit is perfect.
All of your wardrobe staples should fit impeccably. Especially if you’re going to spend a bit more, be sure the cut of the dress is both flattering and comfortable. Take the time to get the hemline or sleeve length adjusted if needed so it’s just right for your height and ready to go when you need it.
