Finding the right pair of jeans can be a serious mission. It’s one we often abandon after shimmying into dozens of different cuts and washes, deciding to settle for a pair that’s just “fine.” Then we’re left to deal with common denim annoyances like drooping seats and gaping waistbands. After accumulating several pairs of bargain denim that never fit quite right, I dove in a bit deeper and spent the money on quality denim. I now have a range of styles I won’t need to toss any time soon.
Even if you’ve been burned before, it is possible for everyone to find a great pair of jeans by keeping these five tips in mind.
1. Think about your height.
I don’t believe certain cuts of denim are off limits to anyone. But you do need to consider your height when it comes to the details of a style of jeans. Where a flare or distressing will hit on your leg makes all the difference. And if you have a short or long torso, the rise can either be flattering or very uncomfortable. Thankfully, there are more inseams available now, and everyone should have a tailor they trust. It's important to always try a pair on before committing and think about the footwear you’ll typically pair them with.
2. Don’t go too big.
Denim will break in over time. Your chosen pair of jeans should be snug when you put them on at first, but still allow you to move and sit comfortably. If you’re struggling to do up the fly, that’s too small. As they form to your body, they will loosen up just enough. Go too big from the get go and you’ll end up with sagging in places you don’t want it. No matter the cut, the waistband should lay smoothly against your skin, no digging in or sticking out.
3. Consider the upkeep.
Any piece of clothing requires maintenance, some more than others. The same is true with denim. You want to care for it properly so those jeans will last you for years without fading or stretching out. Blends tend to be easier to wash and care for, whereas pure denim shouldn’t be washed too often. There are all sorts of hacks out there, from putting your denim in the freezer to soaking it in the bathtub. Consider the time investment you want to make before buying.
4. Check your inventory.
If you decide to spend a bit more on your denim (my favorite premium brands are AYR and CQY), it makes more sense to have fewer pairs in different styles. I like to have options, but for what they cost, I generally avoid duplicates (with the exception of these). My current denim wardrobe includes kick flares, full-length flares, cropped straight, full-length wide leg and cropped wide leg styles.
5. Remember it’s a waiting game.
Good denim that’s 100% cotton takes time to break in and conform to your body. But the effort is worth it in the end. While full-on stretchy pairs will feel better right away, they can also lose that shape over time. If you don’t want to spend time breaking in your jeans, a pair with added spandex may be your best bet, just go for a low percentage.
