MIDDI Must-Have: Everlane Black Turtleneck
The simple, sophisticated wardrobe staple my closet will never be without.
I first purchased a black turtleneck during my senior year of college. I had a work banquet to attend and I wanted to channel my inner Audrey Hepburn, a la Funny Face. I paired it with slim, ankle-length black trousers and ballet flats and felt chic beyond my 22 years.
Ever since then, the simple black turtleneck has been a wardrobe piece I keep coming back to. Worn with virtually any bottom or layered under a dress, this versatile garment is both practical and classic. I’ve tried several brands over the years, but the one that currently ticks all the boxes for me is the Supima® Micro-Rib Turtleneck from Everlane (£48).
Looking for a new layering piece? Here are three reasons why this particular black turtleneck is my go-to top when I need to look and feel pulled together in a flash:
The cozy fabric.
When it comes to a turtleneck, I want one that’s not too heavy so I can easily layer it with other items, but also not so sheer I can’t wear it on its own. The blend of 96% SUPIMA® cotton and 4% elastane in this turtleneck makes this shirt very soft and comfortable as well as breathable, which is why it’s an easy choice for most of the year here in London. It also holds its shape wash after wash and won’t look stretched out at the end of a long day.The flattering fit.
The cut of this turtleneck is slim but not clingy, hugging your silhouette without digging into your skin. It also hits below the hip so it’s long enough to tuck into whichever bottom you prefer without creating any unwanted lumps under your waistband. The roll-neck collar stays put without being too tight (which is something I can’t stand). And finally, the vertical seam up the back helps to further elongate your torso. The versatility.
As I mentioned above, the myriad of ways you can style a black turtleneck like this one is why I always have them in my closet. It’s also great for those days you can’t fathom making one more decision. Whenever I travel, I usually throw one in my bag, knowing it will work with almost everything else I’ve packed. Worn tucked into wide leg jeans with lug sole boots or with a leather pencil skirt and slingbacks, the final look is effortlessly stylish.
Something to read …
If you’re looking for a quick read, author Christine Coulson’s latest novel, One Woman Show, is a treat. Coulson, a former writer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, tells the story of Kitty entirely in the format of 75-word wall labels like those you would find hanging in a museum alongside pieces of art.
