Packing is an art form. Knowing how to prepare for scheduled events and surprises without bringing along your entire closet is a true skill, and some people just have it. The rest of us need a helping hand now and again paring down that pile of shirts or that Dopp kit stuffed with creams and cosmetics. Thankfully, there are lots of solutions out there to make baggage fees a thing of the past and free up room for souvenirs on your next trip.
My packing style continues to be a work in progress. These three picks accompanied me on a trip back to America last week, and each one made me feel a bit closer to my goal of becoming a packing pro.
Just remember: When in doubt, take it out.
1. Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon Night Gel-Cream (£75)
I’ve started to streamline the number of treatments I pack thanks to this product from Dermalogica, the brand founded by Jane Wurwand in 1986. Like a sleeping pack, aromatherapy mask and moisturizer in one, this hydrating gel-cream has a super light texture that brings my skin back to life after a long flight. The key ingredients are Persian silk tree and Wu-Zhu-Yu extracts, plus tamarind seed to plump and brighten. The other reason I love it so much is the addition of French lavender, sandalwood and patchouli, a combo that helps me fall asleep fast. The mini size is perfect for traveling.
2. Nike Air Max Terrascape 90 (£134.95)
When it comes to sneakers, you typically have your cute pairs and your functional pairs. The former you wear with dresses or jeans, while the latter is for getting around or working out. The Nike Air Max Terrascape 90 has changed it all for me. Not only are these Nike kicks supportive and comfortable for walking or exercising, but they also work just as well with your non-athletic gear. From the first wear they fit like a dream and never gave me those dreaded heel blisters. The grey pair pictured above is also on sale right now for 40% off.
3. Eono Compression Packing Cubes (£35.99 for a set of 4)
Packing light has never been my strong suit. I have schlepped massive bags on planes, trains and automobiles for the sake of having “options.” But the recent air travel troubles at UK airports had me rethinking my packing habits ahead of my trip back to the states last week. Thanks to these affordable, highly rated packing cubes from Amazon, I fit a week’s worth of outfits, shoes, accessories and personal care items in a carry-on for the first time ever. Just open the bags up, pack in all of your clothing and then close both zippers to flatten them. It’s as simple as that.
Something to think about …
I love a true-crime podcast. But this recent episode of My Favorite Murder really got me thinking about how I consume this type of content. Hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark are joined by Kara Robinson Chamberlain, whose survival story they previously covered, to discuss how to share these tales in a responsible way that doesn’t create further trauma for survivors and the family members of victims.
Last week on MIDDI …
