That Summertime Feeling
From sunrise to sunset, three ways to keep the summer vibes going around the clock.
Picnics in the park (and stumbling upon cricket matches like this one) are finally here to stay, reminding me of all my favorite sights, sounds and smells of summer. It’s a season full of rituals—the same meals shared and destinations visited with loved ones year after year. This season always makes me miss growing up in Michigan, where summer is all about hours spent on the lake. Hopefully you’re able to revisit some of your cherished rituals again this season.
This week’s three products continue the theme of simplifying your daily routine and keeping that bright, warm feeling of summer going.
Let’s make some memories.
1. Starface Space Wash ($10.99/£8.99)
Last week, I shared one of my all-time favorite sunscreens. This week, it only makes sense to share one of my favorite ways to remove all of that sunscreen, sweat and summer fun. With a roster of founders that includes former Elle US beauty director Julie Schott, Starface makes effective (and fun) products for acne-prone skin that are gentle enough for everyone. This cleanser has a list of ingredients (white willow bark, sage leaf and calendula to name a few) and texture similar to luxury items without being pricey, so you can send it down the drain without buyer’s remorse.
2. REISS Bailey Mid Rise Slim Cropped Jeans (£110)
Denim is something I’ll always spend a bit more on. You can feel the difference as soon as you put on a pair of quality jeans and you’ll see the difference after several wears and washes. Launched in 1971, British apparel company REISS is known for its impeccable materials and attention to detail, with seasonal designs that always feel modern but never trendy. This pair of jeans is just slim enough with a flattering cut that’s straight, not skinny. Wear them now on cooler summer evenings with a tank or cropped t-shirt and then add a sweater and ankle boots once fall rolls around.
3. Apotheke Charcoal Candle ($14-$68)
When I think of summer, I always think of bonfires at the end of long days spent in the sun. For my fellow city dwellers (like Apotheke founder Chrissy Fichtl) and yard-less renters, this Brooklyn-made candle is the next best thing. The mix of sandalwood, cedar and amber transports me right back to those evenings spent relaxing in backyards surrounded by family and friends. There’s also something cool and romantic about a black candle. If you love that smoky scent, there’s an entire charcoal range to enjoy. I love the idea of a signature candle for your home—this is mine.
Something to think about …
As a J-school grad who is also married to a journalist, media literacy and journalism education are very important to me. The America Needs Journalism campaign from RAYGUN supports student and local journalism, both of which are indispensable.
Would love to try the jeans!
