How to Shop for … the Perfect White T-Shirt
Narrow down the options for this versatile wardrobe staple in five steps.
I try not to ever describe anything as a “must have,” but I will make an exception for a well-fitting, crisp white t-shirt. Once you pick your ideal fit, you’re sure to find yourself reaching for it time and time again. Ideal for layering and pairing well with practically any bottom, a white t-shirt is the answer when you need an easy, comfortable option.
The quest for the perfect white t-shirt is perhaps rivaled only by the search for the perfect pair of jeans. There are now options at every price point, from bargain multipacks to luxe options I would be terrified of wearing while eating or drinking (unless I was Jeremy Allen White). My mid-priced pick can be found here.
To help you hunt down your go-to white t-shirt, here are five things to keep in mind:
1. Think about usage.
How and when you plan to wear your white t-shirt will determine the material, fit and, ultimately how much you want to spend on it. Think about how prone you are to spills and how much a star or supporting player a white t-shirt tends to be in your outfits.
2. Consider the cut.
The fit you choose means the difference between an ultra-casual look or a more formal one. I love a slouchy white t-shirt for more everyday uses. But when I want to dress it up, I prefer an option that is cut closer to my body without being clingy so I can easily tuck it in if needed. It should reach the top of my hips in length and as for sleeves, I find the most flattering fit hits in the middle of my upper arm and is loose enough to fit a finger or two.
3. Weigh your fabric options.
Now, cotton is the obvious choice for a white t-shirt. Cotton is soft and very breathable. Plus, it’s easy to care for. But it can also lose its shape throughout the day and with repeated wear. Blends with materials like TENCEL™, jersey or Lycra can help keep the shape intact, add stretch or provide additional cooling or warmth.
4. Check the transparency.
One of the biggest concerns with a white t-shirt is being able to see through it when you don’t want to. The fabric you choose will determine how transparent the shirt is and it’s always worth checking in different lighting (and with different undergarments) to make sure you get the desired look you want.
5. Keep it clean.
A white t-shirt looks best when it’s bright and clean, especially in a professional setting. Make sure the shirt you pick is easy to keep fresh and that you won’t mind the cost of replacing it once it gets discolored, stretched out or stained.
