That New York Groove, Part Two
A few more things before I go ... because NYC shopping never gets old.
Big cities like New York have a reputation for being unforgiving and impersonal. The phrase, “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere” certainly doesn’t help change the mind of anyone intimidated by these places. But having been lucky enough to call NYC home on two separate occasions, I know the exact opposite to be true. Being in this city last year only cemented my love for its people and the sense of community you can feel in each neighborhood. Through the hum of the subway or chatter of passersby on the sidewalk you can hear one thing loud and clear: a strong, resilient heartbeat.
I could write many editions of MIDDI dedicated to my favorite city, so as I prepare to head back to London, I thought I would share three more NYC picks. They all capture the innovation and passion of everyone who calls this magical place home and all those who will one day.
NYC, always and forever.
1. New London Pharmacy (246 8th Ave)
NYC is full of wonderful independently owned pharmacies. When I lived in Chelsea, New London (opened in 1960 and currently owned by John and Abby Fazio) was my go-to spot. Not only did they handle my prescriptions and vaccinations, but they also carry an impressive selection of beauty products from around Europe. This where I found my favorite spot treatment and was introduced to brands like Collosol and Lixirskin. If you’re a beauty obsessive like me, this is the place to go. They also sell a wide range of deliciously scented candles. Click on the image above for a tour.
2. RECLINER NYC Sleep Tee Set - Newsprint ($110)
You know I love a pajama set. They help me feel cozy and comfortable no matter where I am. Launched in 2015 by Brit Rebecca Smith, RECLINER aims to make pajamas you’ll have in your collection for years. Ninety-five percent biodegradable and carbon neutral, their sets are so soft and just thick enough for a comfortable night’s sleep all year round. They’re made of Dreamtech®, which is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, temperature regulating and durable. I purchased the Classic PJ Set in this same print last year and definitely need to add this one to my collection.
To me, NYC is the most colorful city in the world. And Verrier Handcrafted’s neon-hued creations capture its spirit perfectly. Started in 2004 by mother-and-daughter duo Jude and Ashleigh Verrier as a clothing line, they launched their brightly colored prints with touches of glitter in 2014. Beyond those, their offerings include greeting cards and accessories like cell phone cases and cosmetic bags. I first encountered their work at the SoHo location of Artists & Fleas. Since then, I’m happy to see their pieces on sale at Harrods (in-store only) for a bit of NYC in London.
Something to think about …
Twenty years on, first responders are still suffering the effects of 9/11. You can support them through organizations like FDNY Foundation, which helps current and former members of the New York City Fire Department and their families.
