2021 Fashion Gift Guide
Three fashion finds worth splurging on for someone special (or yourself).
My gifting philosophy has always been about observation. I want to give those I love something to elevate their everyday lives — a gift that strikes the right balance between practicality and luxury. I pay attention to their habits and routines, their personal style and the items they always comment on. If they mention something specific they need or want, I’ll make a note of it. I don’t want to give them a gift out of left field that doesn’t suit their taste or lifestyle. I want it to be something they’ll use right away, but maybe wouldn’t have bought for themselves.
All of the items in this second gift guide (see the first one here) are just that. Each one serves a clear purpose, but is a bit more of an indulgence. Add them to your shopping list for a thoughtful upgrade.
'Tis the season for making someone smile.
1. Russell & Bromley Conquer Boot (£245)
As someone who is constantly tripping and slipping, the abundance of lug-sole boot styles out right now makes me very happy. Great for city or country dwellers, these extended elastic Chelsea boots from Russell & Bromley (featured previously in this edition) work just as well with sweats or jeans as they do a dress and tights. They have an elastic sock to keep warmth in and a chunky rubber sole to keep water out. There are five colors to choose from — you can’t go wrong with classic black, but I’m personally lusting after the patent croc pair.
2. Desmond & Dempsey Pyjama Sets (£100 and up)
You know I love a PJ set (some other favorites here and here). They’re cozy and chic at the same time and help me feel at home wherever I am. And the bolder the pattern the better, which is why I’ve been admiring the pyjama sets from Desmond & Dempsey for months now. Launched in 2014 by Joel Jeffery and Molly Goddard, the pyjamas from D&D are made from breathable cotton with hand-painted prints. My favorite style is the short set to keep you cool while you sleep. To make this gift extra special, consider taking them up on their free monogramming service.
3. Milaner Classic Elena in Vachetta ($545)
Handbags can be very costly gifts. But for me, a big, leather tote is the easiest to justify. If you decide to splurge on a bag this holiday season, this woven one from Milaner ticks all the right boxes: The color and shape aren’t trendy and you can use it for work, school, running errands or travel. The Vachetta leather only gets better with use, deepening in color over time. I just can’t see anyone getting sick of using this bag anytime soon. Founded by childhood friends Elisa Rossi and Serena Spinucci, all of their products are made to order by Italian and French artisans.
Something to think about …
This week, Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s a time to gather together, share a meal and be grateful for all we have. But there are far too many people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from, which is why you should consider donating to or volunteering at your local food bank. Food shouldn’t be a luxury.
